Allah (swt) Said.

Therefore remember me, and I will remember you

[Quran 2:152]

The Science of Dhikr

The person who remembers Allah, is the person who keeps his eyes on his destination. The journey is arduous. The distractions are many. Satan and our own desires are constantly trying to steer us away from our goal. But, the stakes are extremely high. And a vigilant and wise person will never lose sight of his destination. Such is the person who remembers Allah all the time.

"Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, there are indeed Signs for men of understanding-- men who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides." [Al Imran 3:190-191]

This remembrance or dhikr is itself the source of strength for the believer. According to the hadith qudsi, Allah says: "I am with my servant as long as he remembers Me."

Abu Darda (radiallahu anhu) said: "For everything there is a polish and the polish for the heart is the dhikr of Allah."
Indeed, there is no difference between the living and the dead, except with the dhikr of Allah; since [the Prophet ] said: "The example of one who remembers Allah and someone who does not, is like the example between the living and the dead."
[Sahih al-Bukhari; 11:208, Muslim; 1:539]

What to say?

Abu Said (Radiyallahu Anhu) reports that the messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) narrated in a Hadith Qudsi that Allah Subhanawa Taala says: He who us unable to do dhikr and make supplications because of pre-occupation with the Quran, I grant him better that what is given to the supplicators. The Excellence of Allah’s words (Quran) over all other words is like the Excellence of Allah over all his creations

[Tirmidhi]

Abdullah Ibne-Amr (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates that the messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said; Fasting and the Quran, both will intercede for the slave of Allah on the say of resurrection. Fasting will say: O my Rabb! I kept him away from food and human desires, so accept my intercession for him. And the Quran will say: I did not let him sleep at night, so accept my intercession for him.

[Musnad-Ahmad, Tabrani]

SubhanAllah wa biHamdihi (Glory be to Allah and Praise Him).

Whoever says (the above) a hundred times during the day, his sins are wiped away, even if they are like the foam of the sea.

[Sahih Muslim]

SubhanAllahi l-adheem wa biHamdihi

(Glory be to Allah, The Supreme, and Praise Him)

A palm tree is planted for the reciter in Paradise.

[At-Tirmidhi, Al-Hakim]

SubhanAllahi wa biHamdihi, Subhan-Allahi l-adheem

(Glory be to Allah, and Praise, Glory be to Allah, the Supreme)

Prophet Muhammad said: "Two words are light on the tongue, weigh heavily in the balance, they are loved by the Most Merciful One."

[Al-Bukhari, Muslim]

SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah)

Whoever recites [the above] one Hundred times, a thousand good deeds are recorded for him or a thousand bad deeds are wiped away.

[Muslim]

La Hawla wa la Quwatta illa Billah

(There is no Might or Power except with Allah)

The above is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise.

[Sahih al-Bukhari, Muslim]

SubhanAllah, walHamdulilah, wa La illaha ilAllahu, waAllahu Akbar, wa la Hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

(Glory be to Allah, All Praise is for Allah, There is No God but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, There is no might or any power Except with Allah)

Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet said: "During the Night Journey I met Ibrahim (alayhis salam) who said to me:

“O Muhammad, convey my greetings to your Community, and tell them that the Paradise is of pure land, its water is sweet, and its expanse is vast, spacious and even. And its seedlings are SubhanAllah, walhamdulilah, wa la ilaha ilAllah, waAllahu Akbar.”

[at-Tirmidhi]

La illaha ilAllah (There is No God But Allah)

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet said: "When a servant of Allah utters the words la ilaha illallah sincerely, the doors of heaven open up for these words until they reach the Throne of Allah, so long as its utterer keeps away from the major sins.”

[At-Tirmidhi]

La illaha ilAllah (There is No God But Allah)

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet said, "Renew your faith." "How can we renew our faith?" they asked. The Prophet replied: "Say always: la ilaha illallah."

[Ahmad]

La illaha ilAllahu, waHdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul Mulku, wa lahul Hamd, wa Huwa ala kulli shaiy'in Qadeer

(There is No God But Allah Alone, who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the raise, and He is Able to do all things)

Whoever says the above one Hundred times has the reward of freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds are recorded for him and a hundred bad deeds are wiped away and he has gained refuge from the devil that day until evening and none shall come with anything better except someone who has done more.

[Al-Bukhari, Muslim]

(O Allah! You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me, and I confess to You all my sins. So I entreat You to forgive my sins, for nobody can forgive sins except You.)

The above du'a is known as the Sayyid al-Istighfar and is the most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah. Whoever says it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.

[Sahih al-Bukhari 8, 75 #318.]

If someone implements ten verses of the Qur'an, He/She will not be considerate amongst the negligent on the Day of Judgment.

[Abu Dawud, Ibn Hibban]

If someone implements one hundred verses of the Qur'an, He/She will be considered among the obedient on the Day of Judgment.

[Abu Dawud, Ibn Hibban]

If someone implements one thousand verses of the Qur'an, He/She will be amongst the extremely rich on the Day of Judgement.

[Abu Dawud, Ibn Hibban]

Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Whoever of you performs Wudu’ carefully and then affirms:

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharika Lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa Rasuluhu [I testify that there so no true god except Allah Alone, Who has no partners and that Muhammad ((PBUH) is His slave and Messenger],’

the eight gates of Jannah are opened for him. He may enter through whichever of these gates he desires (to enter).

[Muslim]

SubhanAllah wa biHamdihi

(Glory be to Allah and I Praise Him)
Whoever says the above a hundred times during the day, his sins are wiped away, even if they are like the foam of the sea
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Muslim]

Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times

[Allahumma inni as'aluk al-Jannah],

then Paradise will say: "O Allah! Enter him into Paradise!"

Whoever seeks protection with Allah from the Fire three times

[Allahumma najjini min an-Nar],

the Fire will say: "O Allah! Protect him from the Fire!"
[Tirmidhi]

Juwairiyah (radiyallahu anha) narrates that Nabi (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) left her for the morning salat, while she was in her place of salat, and returned after salat-ul-duha (forenoon prayer) and found her sitting in the same place. He asked: Are you still in the same state (remembering Allah) as I left you? She replied: Yes. Nabi (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Since I left you, I have said four phrases three times, if weighed against all that you have remembered Allah today, it would outweigh them. These phrases are:
Subhan Allahi wa bi hamdihi `adada khalqihi wa rida nafsihi wa zinata `arshihi wa midada kalimatihi
(Glory be to Allah and praise to Him to the number of His creation and to the extent of His pleasure and to the extent of the weight of His Throne and to the extent of ink used in recording words for His Praise)
[Muslim]

"Whoever enters the marketplace and says: 'There is none worthy of worship except Allah who has no partners, for Him is the Dominion, and for Him is all Praise, He brings life and He causes death, and He is Alive and does not die, in His Hand is all good, and He is able to do all things,'

then Allah will write one million good deeds for him, and will wipe away one million of his bad deeds, and will raise him one million levels and will build a home for him in Paradise."

[Sahih al-Jami]
